domains / marketing / competitor-research / competitor-research
The two skills share the name but define different procedures. The first is an SEO/content-focused playbook that prescribes specific tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, SimilarWeb), SERP/site: operators, and a report structure for keyword, content, and backlink gaps. The second is a general business research skill focused on verifying growth claims, launch history, and acquisition evidence from public or supplied materials, with strict rules on evidence labeling, avoiding conflation of metrics, and proposing experiments. They overlap in the goal of analyzing competitors but differ in scope, data sources, and output constraints, so crowning one would hide a real alternative.

# Competitor Research ## 1. Define Scope and Decision Identify the specific competitor(s), the research question (e.g., SEO gap, growth history, pricing), and the user's context (stage, budget, product). ## 2. Select Evidence Route - **SEO/Content Focus:** Use SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush) for keyword overlap, backlink gaps, and SERP analysis. Use `site:` operator for indexed pages. - **General Business/Growth Focus:** Use public web search or supplied materials. Verify claims by reading full passages, not just snippets. Distinguish between public web, supplied files, and connected data. ## 3. Gather Evidence - **SEO:** Analyze competitor titles, H1s, word counts, H2 structures, and backlink profiles. Identify content and keyword gaps. - **General:** Record claim, source URL, date, and limitations. Distinguish observed facts from attributed claims. Do not conflate installs with revenue or directory listings with customers. ## 4. Analyze - **SEO:** Determine length targets, structure adoption, and outreach targets for link gaps. - **General:** Label conclusions as fact, claim, estimate, or hypothesis. Compare like-for-like metrics. Identify transferable tactics based on user constraints. ## 5. Deliver - **SEO Report:** Include competitors, research type, findings (gaps/opportunities), and recommendations (content/links). - **General Brief:** Lead with decision-relevant findings. Include supported timeline, channel evidence, and up to three experiments (observation → hypothesis → test → success measure). ## Conflicts - **kostja94/marketing-skills** assumes access to paid SEO tools and focuses on technical SEO metrics. - **davepoon/buildwithclaude** assumes general web access and focuses on verifying business claims and growth narratives without specific SEO tool dependencies.
