Use when designing the conceptual exhibits of a Progress in Human Geography (PiHG) review essay — typologies, framework diagrams, concept genealogies, and synthesis tables that do argumentative work. For a review journal these are conceptual, not data graphics. Designs exhibits; it does not build the argument itself.

When to use

• Designing typologies and matrices
• Creating framework diagrams
• Building concept genealogies and timelines
• Constructing synthesis and comparison tables
• Laying out agenda tables
• Turning complex synthesis into legible figures
• Deciding if an exhibit earns its place in an essay

When not to use

• Building the argument itself
• Plotting empirical results
• Creating data graphics
• Importing bibliometric counts as the argument
