monetization-strategy

Skill card

combined

The two skills share the same name and both cover monetization models, but they target different contexts and contain material steps the other lacks. phuryn/pm-skills is a general product/business-model brainstorming skill that requires 3-5 strategies with audience fit, unit economics, competitive position, and validation experiments. appeeky/aso-skills is a mobile-app-specific optimization skill that adds paywall timing, pricing psychology, category benchmarks, free-trial strategy, IAP design, and App Store conversion metrics. Neither is a reproduction of the other, so crowning one would hide a real alternative.

# Monetization Strategy

## Scope
Use this skill when exploring revenue models, pricing, paywalls, subscriptions, or in-app purchases for a product or mobile app.

## Initial Assessment
1. Read any existing context file (e.g., app-marketing-context.md) if present.
2. Ask for the product or feature description.
3. Ask for the target market segment(s) and customer profile.
4. Ask for the current monetization model (free, freemium, paid, subscription, ads, IAP).
5. Ask for current pricing, conversion rate (free-to-paid or trial-to-paid), and category.
6. Ask for competitive monetization approaches and company priorities (revenue growth, user growth, profitability).

## Strategy Brainstorming
Develop 3-5 distinct monetization approaches. For each strategy include:

### 1. Strategy Name & Description
- What is the monetization model?
- How does it work for this product?
- Who pays and what do they get?

### 2. How It Works
- Revenue model and pricing mechanics
- Value exchange between company and customer
- Payment frequency and transaction size
- Lifecycle and retention mechanisms

### 3. Audience Fit
- Why does this resonate with the target customer?
- How does it align with customer needs and preferences?
- What problems does it solve?
- Addressable market size and revenue potential

### 4. Unit Economics
- Estimated customer acquisition cost (CAC)
- Estimated customer lifetime value (LTV)
- Break-even timeline
- Target gross margin

### 5. Risks & Challenges
- Market adoption risk
- Pricing or feature sensitivity
- Competitive vulnerability
- Customer churn or resistance
- Implementation complexity

### 6. Competitive Position
- How do competitors monetize?
- What makes your approach differentiated?
- Barriers to customer switching
- Defense against competitive pricing

### 7. Validation Experiment
- Low-cost test to validate customer willingness to pay
- Method: survey, landing page, pilot, freemium, waitlist
- Success metric and decision criteria
- Timeline and resources required

## Mobile App Specifics
If the product is a mobile app, additionally address:

### Paywall Design
- Choose paywall timing: onboarding, after aha moment, feature gate, usage limit, or time-based trial.
- Structure: benefit-driven headline, 3-5 key benefits, social proof, pricing options (annual highlighted), free trial CTA, restore purchases, visible close button.
- Use pricing psychology: end in .99, anchor with monthly, show weekly price for expensive subscriptions, use 3-tier pricing.

### Free Trial Strategy
- Select trial length: 3 days (simple apps), 7 days (most apps), 14 days (complex/B2B), 30 days (enterprise/high-price).
- Send value reminders during trial, show trial countdown, offer discounted first period at trial end, make cancellation easy.

### In-App Purchase Strategy
- Consumable IAPs: price anchoring, bundle discounts, limited-time offers, starter packs.
- Non-Consumable IAPs: unlock premium features individually, bundle related features, offer Pro Upgrade as one-time purchase alternative.

### Category Benchmarks
- Productivity: $4.99-$9.99/month, $29.99-$49.99/year
- Health & Fitness: $9.99-$14.99/month, $49.99-$79.99/year
- Education: $9.99-$19.99/month, $49.99-$99.99/year
- Photo & Video: $4.99-$9.99/month, $29.99-$49.99/year
- Games: $4.99-$9.99/month, $29.99-$49.99/year
- Finance: $4.99-$14.99/month, $29.99-$79.99/year

### Revenue Metrics
- ARPU: Revenue / Total Users
- ARPPU: Revenue / Paying Users (target 3-10x ARPU)
- Conversion Rate: Paying / Total Users (target 2-10%)
- Trial-to-Paid: Paid / Trial Starts (target 40-60%)
- LTV: ARPU × Avg Lifetime (target > CAC)
- Payback Period: CAC / Monthly ARPU (target < 6 months)

## Output Process
1. Brainstorm 3-5 distinct monetization strategies (avoid repeating similar models).
2. For each strategy, describe how it works, assess fit, outline risks, estimate unit economics, and compare against competitive approaches.
3. For each strategy, design a low-effort validation experiment.
4. Prioritize by strategic fit, ease of implementation, market validation potential, and competitive advantage.
5. Recommend 1-2 strategies to test first.
6. Create a testing roadmap and success criteria.

## Conflicts
- phuryn/pm-skills requires multi-strategy brainstorming with unit economics and competitive positioning; appeeky/aso-skills focuses on a single recommended model with paywall design and App Store conversion metrics. When both apply, produce the multi-strategy brainstorm first, then apply the mobile-app-specific paywall, trial, and IAP guidance to the recommended strategy.
