porters-five-forces

Skill card

combined

The two copies implement the same framework but with materially different procedures. The phuryn copy is a static, heuristic checklist that asks the user to supply the industry and competitor landscape and then evaluates each force using qualitative 'High/Low When' criteria. The deanpeters copy is an evidence-cited workflow that mandates a search plan, external data collection (filings, analyst coverage), specific 'weak/moderate/strong' ratings with documented signals, and a final 'profit pool' analysis. Because the deanpeters version requires an active investigation process and specific output schema that the phuryn version lacks, and the phuryn version provides a self-contained heuristic that the deanpeters version does not, crowning one would hide a real alternative approach (static heuristic vs. active research).

# Porter's Five Forces

## Mode Selection
1. **Static Heuristic Mode**: Use when the user provides the industry context and competitor landscape, and a quick structural read is needed.
2. **Evidence-Cited Mode**: Use when the decision is high-stakes (e.g., market entry) and requires external validation, specific ratings, and a profit pool analysis.

## Static Heuristic Mode (from phuryn/pm-skills)
1. **Input**: Industry definition, competitors, suppliers, customers, substitutes, and new entrants.
2. **Evaluate Each Force**:
   - **Competitive Rivalry**: Assess intensity based on number of competitors, growth rate, differentiation, and exit barriers.
   - **Supplier Power**: Assess based on supplier concentration, switching costs, and backward integration threats.
   - **Buyer Power**: Assess based on customer concentration, switching costs, and price sensitivity.
   - **Threat of Substitutes**: Assess based on availability, price-performance, and switching costs to alternatives.
   - **Threat of New Entrants**: Assess based on barriers to entry, capital needs, and incumbent vulnerability.
3. **Strategic Implications**: For each force, list 3-5 strategic actions (e.g., diversify suppliers, build switching costs).

## Evidence-Cited Mode (from deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills)
1. **Input**: Industry segment, decision supported, and geographic boundary. Ask max 3 questions if missing.
2. **Search Plan**: Define what to search for each force (filings, analyst coverage, trade press).
3. **Rate Each Force**:
   - Assign a rating: **Weak**, **Moderate**, or **Strong**.
   - Provide **Signals**: Documented evidence (URLs, data points) justifying the rating.
   - **AI-Driven Substitution**: Explicitly assess AI as a substitute threat in knowledge industries.
4. **Profit Pool Analysis**: Conclude with where the profit pool sits and who is squeezing it.
5. **Output Schema**:
   ```markdown
   # Five Forces: [Industry]
   **As-of date:** | **Boundary:** | **Decision supported:**
   ## 1. Competitive Rivalry — [Rating]
   - Signals: [Evidence]
   ## 2. Threat of New Entrants — [Rating]
   - Signals: [Evidence]
   - What it means here: [One sentence]
   ## 3. Threat of Substitutes — [Rating]
   - Signals: [Evidence]
   - What it means here: [One sentence]
   ## 4. Buyer Power — [Rating]
   - Signals: [Evidence]
   ## 5. Supplier Power — [Rating]
   - Signals: [Evidence]
   - What it means here: [One sentence]
   ## Profit Pool Implication
   - Where the margin goes and who captures it.
   ```

## Conflicts
- **Investigation Depth**: The phuryn copy assumes the user provides the data; the deanpeters copy mandates the agent perform the investigation.
- **Output Format**: The phuryn copy uses qualitative 'High/Low' lists; the deanpeters copy uses a strict schema with 'Weak/Moderate/Strong' ratings and URLs.
